The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception
The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is one of the most famous buildings in Ecuador and Cuenca. It was built during a time when there were few churches in Cuenca, so it has become an icon for this city.
The cathedral’s construction began in 1875 and it took 40 years to complete. The structure is made from stone quarried locally, which explains why you can see some sections where the stone has been cut away so that other stones could be placed inside them (this is called voussoir). The result is an impressive mix of styles that includes Romanesque, Renaissance and Baroque styles.
The interior of the cathedral features beautiful stained glass windows along with paintings depicting biblical scenes on its walls; both are stunning works of art! During my visit here I was able to hear a choir singing beneath its majestic arches as well—it was just amazing!

When traveling to Cuenca Ecuador, you’ll first need to get there.
Airport: Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO)
Location: The airport is located in the province of Azuay, at an altitude of 2,720 meters above sea level.
Cuenca Foreigners Office
The Foreigners Office is located at the Centro Cívico del Bienestar Social on the north side of Plaza de la Independencia, which is Cuenca’s central square. The office offers a variety of services for foreigners and their families living in Ecuador.
The office helps with all types of visas as well as passport applications and renewals, birth certificates for children born abroad, residency permits (permisos de residencia), work permits (permisos de trabajo), police checks and other legal matters related to immigration.
To get there from your hostel or hotel take a taxi from anywhere in town; it should cost $3–4 USD per person each way depending on traffic conditions at that time of day/weekend etc.. The office itself has no set hours but they are generally open 8:30am–5pm Monday through Friday (closed weekends).
If you’re planning on staying longer than 90 days then be sure to bring your documents into one of these offices prior to leaving so they can stamp them!
Banco del Austro
Banco del Austro is located just a few blocks from the Plaza de Independencia, which is the main square in the city.
The bank’s hours of operation are from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday. There are no weekend hours or holidays.
You can make an appointment by calling them at 011-593-4-250007, or simply show up and wait in line with everyone else. The bank is open during normal business hours, but there may be as many as 30 people waiting in line outside!
Feria Libre
Cuenca’s Feria Libre is a week-long celebration of the arts, crafts, and culture of Ecuador. It is also a time to enjoy the city’s many restaurants, bars and nightclubs.
The festival begins on Monday morning with parades from all over the country in La Plaza de los Pasos Perdidos (Lost Steps Square). You can watch as these groups perform their traditional dances, music and dress for an audience of thousands.
There are also many activities for children during Feria Libre including parades by schools throughout Cuenca; contests for children’s art projects; clown shows; magic shows; puppet shows and much more!
Turismo Cuenca — Tourist Information Office
Turismo Cuenca is the city’s official tourism office, and it offers a wealth of information on things to see, do and eat in Cuenca. Located at Plaza San Blas (one of the main squares in town), Turismo Cuenca is open Monday through Friday from 9 am until 6 pm, Saturdays from 9 am to 2 pm. The office has an extensive library of books about Ecuador as well as other countries in South America.
The friendly staff at Turismo Cuenca can help you find accommodations and make reservations upon request. They can also arrange tours for groups or individuals who want to explore the area around Cuenca — whether by foot or by car — with English-speaking guides trained in natural history and archaeology.
Tranvia (Trolley Car) Tours of Cuenca
- The tranvia is a trolley car that takes you around the city. It’s free and air-conditioned, so it’s well worth taking a ride on if you have time during your visit to Cuenca.
- The tranvia is open from 9am until 5pm, so it’s convenient for both day trippers and overnight guests in Cuenca.
- You don’t need to know Spanish to do this tour; everything is explained in English and other languages as well.
