Qualification was open to all FIFA member associations, of which there are currently 211.Qatar, as host, automatically qualified for the tournament. AFC, on the other hand, urged Qatar to compete in Asian qualifiers, as the first two rounds also served as qualifiers for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.
Qatar won their group, but second place in the fifth-best group went into the third round of the AFC.
After the first two tournaments in 1930 and 1934, the World Cup is organized for the first time by a country whose team has never been in a final.
France, the reigning world champion, also took part in the qualification as usual.
Seven teams withdrew.Saint Lucia initially qualified for CONCACAF but later withdrew.

FIFA revealed the match schedule on July 15, 2020.
The sole group stage match with a definite site and time occurred on the opening day, which will be contested on 21 November 2022 at the Al Bayt Stadium.
Four matches will be played each day during the group stage, with kick-off timings of 13:00, 16:00, 19:00, and 22:00 for the first two rounds, and 18:00 and 22:00 for the last round and knockout round matches.
The third-place match will take place on December 17, 2022, at the Khalifa International Stadium, while the final will take place on December 18, 2022, at the Lusail Iconic Stadium.

Unlike previous tournaments, where match venues and kick-off times for each fixture were determined prior to the draw, the assignment of group fixtures for each matchday to a specific venue and kick-off time was made only after the group stage draw and the teams for each specific fixture were determined.
Because of the venues’ close proximity, the organisers were able to optimise stadium allocation for spectators and kick-off timings for broadcast viewers.
